EMS ISO14000
Environmental Management System Consultancy &
Auditor Training Courses
It has become a requirement for organizations to address
the environment in order to maintain customers, and thrive in an ever
more critical global economy.
Our EMS specifies requirements for an environmental management
system to enable an organization to develop & implement a policy
and objectives which take into account legal requirements and other
requirements to which the organization subscribes, and information about
significant environmental aspects. It applies to those environmental
aspects that the organization identifies as those, which it can control,
and those, which it can influence.
There are a number of standards available, around which we can model
our Environmental Management System, or EMS.
-
On the international scene mostly
widely accepted is ISO14001. This standard was selected in 1996, and
forms part of the ISO14000 series of standards providing not only
a specification but also guidance and advice on implementing a wide
range of environmental subjects including auditing, labeling, life-cycle
assessment etc.
-
At the European level we have EMAS,
or the Eco-Management and Audit Scheme. This was introduced by a European
Union council regulation (No.1836/93), requiring implementation in
all European Union Member States. EMAS was formally introduced in
the United Kingdom in April 1995. Although the scheme itself is mandatory
in all EU Countries it is, at present, a voluntary scheme for individual
companies who must be within the industrial sector. It is intended
to provide recognition for those companies who have established a
programme of environmental action designed to protect, and to continuously
improve, their environmental performance.
-
UK has had its own EMS Standard,
BS7750, since 1992 and increasing number of companies, within and
without the UK, has achieved Registration to it. The requirements
of BS7750 slightly different to ISO 14001)
Common benefits from implementing EMS are:
1.Better environment awareness within the organization
2.Cost saving and reduction in waste handling, transport & disposal
and resource usage
3. Minimizes hazardous and non-hazardous waste.
4. Enhanced efficiencies
5.Securing competitive advantage and improve international competitiveness
6.Standards fir in well with organizations’ existing management
system portfolio
